The Week In WTA Winners: Kvitova Pounds Clijsters, Hantuchova Wins In Thailand

Posted by gauloises1 on February 13, 2011

Paris

Give it up for Petra Kvitova, taking her second WTA title of 2011 at the Premier Paris Open tournament, beating Kim Clijsters 64 63 in the final.  She had two exceptionally tough matches against Barbora Zahlalova Strycova and Yanina Wickmayer before cruising against Mattek-Sands, and Clijsters never looked like winning. The pace and depth of Petra’s shots – and serve – are so unbeatable when she’s on, and she’s had a stellar start to the year; if she can keep it up – or at least avoid a string of first round losses such as that which followed her semi-final appearance at Wimbledon last year – she’ll be in the top 10 soon, although clay isn’t her best surface.

And she’s so cute.

It wasn’t a particularly bad week for Clijsters either, as her run to the final puts her back at no. 1 from tomorrow, displacing Caroline Wozniacki. However, they’d better hold off on the trophy presentation for now, as Wozniacki could potentially take back the top spot in Dubai. Congratulations to Kim nevertheless, who did win the last two Slams and is at the top for the first time since 2006.

But we all know hanging about with Momo is the real prize.

Pattaya City

A big week for Daniela Hantuchova in Thailand, taking her fourth career title and her first since Linz in 2007. Ana Ivanovic – having split up with yet another coach, this time Antonio van Grichen – disappointed against Roberta Vinci and Kirilenko lost an absolute screamer in the second round against Galina Voskoboeva, but Hantuchova still had to contend with Kimiko Date-Krumm, who had beaten her in all three of their previous meetings, and queen of Pattaya Vera Zvonareva in the semi-finals before absolutely crushing Sara Errani in the final.

Plato invented the plate.

WTA Saturday: Safs On Fire, Snappers Remember Thailand Exists

Posted by gauloises1 on February 14, 2010

Paris

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Lucie Safarova. She’s beaten Paszek, Schiavone, Peer and now Flavia Pennetta, 46 63 64, to reach her second Paris final (she lost out to Nadia Petrova in 2007). From what I saw of her match against Flavia today, she was on fire.

Safs will be facing another second-time Paris finalist after Elena Dementieva beat Melanie Oudin, 46 64 63. It was a good performance from the believer, but after she wasn’t able to capture the second set, her fitness really let her down in the third and after three consecutive breaks, Dementieva won five of the last six games to take the match.

It was an encouraging tournament for Oudin, though, who moves on to Memphis next week. Elena said that it was the toughest win of the year for her so far, which is nice, considering some of the people she’s beaten. Good stuff.

Pattaya City

Photos! Finally photos!

… Put it away now, Yaroslava.

Top seed Vera Zvonareva is into the final after beating fourth seed Yaroslava Shvedova 62 46 63. She’ll face hometown girl Tamarine Tanasugarn, who defeated Sesil Karantcheva 62 60.

Good stuff.

Paris, Pattaya City: Semifinals Set

Posted by gauloises1 on February 13, 2010

For the first time since the tournament’s inception, there won’t be a Frenchwoman in the quarterfinals in Paris. Second seed Flavia Pennetta beat compatriot Tathiana Garbin, 61 63, to book her spot and will face Lucie Safarova, who demolished sixth seed Shahar Peer 63 60. As my wise friend Jacko would no doubt point out, the fast courts in Paris are made for Safs, and you can’t deny she has oodles of talent … but why does she only show up once in a blue moon? Answers on a postcard.

The other semifinal is a US Open rematch between Elena Dementieva and her spunky kryptonite, Melanie Oudin. Dementieva survived a tough challenge from Andrea Petkovic (now undoubtedly out getting drunk as we speak, and rightly so).

I would have given anything to be able to illustrate this result with a picture of Petkovic miming shooting herself in the head, by the way. Just putting it out there.

Melanie Oudin, meanwhile, continues her upwards momentum. She’s now won her last five matches after coming back from 26 13 down against Agnes Szavay to win 62 in the third. It was another inspiringly gutsy performance, as she was complaining of being ill during the first set and, more significantly, being comprehensively outplayed by Szavay before she clawed her way back in to the match and managed to exert just enough pressure to provide Szavay with an excuse to fall apart. By the third set, both were completely different players, and at least Melanie was moving in the right direction.

In Pattaya City meanwhile, a.k.a the Land that Photojournalists Forgot, hometown girl Tamarine Tanasugarn put an end to Anna Chakvetadze’s two-match streak and will face Sesil Karantcheva in the first semi. In the second, it’ll be Vera Zvonareva against Yaroslava Shvedova. Fair and balanced.

WTA: Wednesday’s Results, Thursday’s OOP

Posted by gauloises1 on February 11, 2010

So things are starting to get pretty interesting in Paris. While top seeds Elena Dementieva and Flavia Pennetta were untroubled by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Alisa Kleybanova, third seed Yanina Wickmayer was upset by Petra Martic, a largely unknown Croat.

I’m not entirely surprised, as Wicky has played a serious lot of tennis recently and could do with at least a couple of days before Dubai. But it’s a seriously big win for Martic, who is hurriedly being publicised by the WTA:

In Pattaya City, Licky was sadly upset by Tamarine Tanasugarn, 75 in the third. Seeds 6-8 also fell, Julia Goerges getting destroyed by Sesil Karantcheva, Sania Mirza losing a three-setter to Tatjana Malek, and Kimiko Date-Krumm forced to retire due to an ankle injury.

Not a great start to the year for Licky …

Now It’s Time To Say Goodbye

Posted by gauloises1 on February 11, 2010

The FFT held its ‘Farewell to Amelie’ ceremony tonight at the Paris tournament. I didn’t see it, and I’m a little glad. It might have killed me.

Warning: feelings to follow. And pictures, obviously.

One last time in the spotlight.

I have no way of knowing, but I bet Elena handled this beautifully. She’s classy that way. Speaks amazing French, too.

Franny’s speech, on the other hand, I would have loved to have heard for very different reasons.

I hope Alize caught some win from this hug.

Mama Momo!

Is it too late to say ‘don’t go?’

DON’T GO, MOMO.

Fed Cup Did Somebody Good

Posted by gauloises1 on February 10, 2010

In the battle of last year’s big/somewhat-a-things, Melanie Oudin pwned Sorana Cirstea 63 60 in Paris today.

This, in the trade, is known as ‘upwards momentum’ for Mel. Sorana, on the other hand, would do well not to let that sophomore slump grow too severe.

WTA Week Ahead: Paris, Pattaya City

Posted by gauloises1 on February 8, 2010

Paris

Draw here.

Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo may not be returning (excuse me while I have a moment to myself), but it’s still a pretty great draw. Serena has predictably withdrawn, so the top seed is Elena Dementieva, and it’s hard to see anyone in her quarter causing her too much trouble, unless Rezai puts in a Sydney-like performance in the quarters. Yanina Wickmayer is the top seed in the second quarter, but after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and putting in a heroic performance in Fed Cup this weekend, it’s hard to see her having the energy for a deep run. Some great first-round matches in this quarter – Szavay-Govortsova, Oudin-Cirstea, and Schnyder-Razzano – and really anyone could come out here. Almost everyone seems due for a deep run.

By comparison the third quarter seems a little light, with Peer, Schiavone, Safarova and Cornet all coming off Fed Cup duty. I can’t see Bacsinszky or Paszek taking much advantage, though. I call a Peer-Schiavone quarterfinal. And in the fourth quarter, the big question is whether Kleybanova can build on a good Fed Cup performance to take out Flavia in the second round and kick on from there. I’m saying no, while Elena Vesnina has yet to do much of note in 2010.

Predicted champion: Elena Dementieva. She nearly won it last year, has had a good long rest after dropping early in the Australian Open and skipping Fed Cup, and this is the kind of tournament where she eats.

Pattaya City

Draw here.

Top four seeds are defending champion Vera Zvonareva, Licky, Vera Dushevina and Yaroslava Shvedova. Looking at Vera’s draw, it’s almost impossible to see her not defending. I just hope Licky can stay in long enough to make things interesting.

Predicted champion: Vera Zvonareva
