Bad Day for JJ, Petko and Kolya.

Posted by gauloises1 on July 23, 2010

Not a great day in some ways. The slumping Alize Cornet knocked out top seed, defending champion and fantastic blogger Andrea Petkovic 62 75 in Bad Gastein. Then JJ rolled her ankle against Anastasia Yakimova and was forced to retire 1-0 down in the third set.

In Hamburg, Kolya was pretty much taken to the woodshed by Andrey Golubev, 64 64. The scoreline doesn’t look as terrible as it was, from what I saw.

Have a classically ridiKolyous photo to make up for it.

Kolya’s loss means that there are just three seeds left in Hamburg after last week’s things Almagro and Montanes also lost. Luckily for me, two of said three seeds are Boss and Nose Job …

WTA Week Ahead: Bad Gastein, Portoroz

Posted by gauloises1 on July 19, 2010

Less mental confusion for the ladies, who are dividing their energies between clay and hard courts, but staying firmly rooted in Europe. Despite this, various websites are referring to them as ‘beginning their US Open campaign’. Taking a hell of a run-up if that’s the case, I’m just saying.

Bad Gastein

Amazing to think there was a time when I didn’t know who Andrea Petkovic was. And yet I have no memory of this event whatsoever, so there’s the proof.

Draw here.

Top seeds: Andrea Petkovic, Timea Bacsinszky, Anabel Medina Garrigues, Klara Zakopalova, Sybille Bammer, Barbora Zahlalova Strycova, Tathiana Garbin, Anastasija Sevastova

Big Question of the Week: how did Timea Bacsinszky get seeded ahead of Medina Garrigues?

Portoroz

Oh, Dinara.

Draw here.

Top seeds: Jelena Jankovic, Petra Kvitova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Sara Errani, Dominika Cibulkova, Vera Dushevina, Polona Hercog, Sofia Arvidsson

Big Question of the Week: Just how much is Portoroz paying these women in appearance fees?

Portoroz: 2 Tickets to the Gun Show, Please.

Posted by irefusetotellyou on July 27, 2009

Safina 'n her GUNZZZZ

Dinara Safina (RUS) d. Sara Errani (ITA) 6-7(5) 6-1 7-5

Seriously, do you have a license for those things? Small children (and/or full-sized adults) could get hurt by just LOOKING at them.

Gilles, Tommy, Stan, AMG Out. But Pico Won!

Posted by gauloises1 on July 21, 2009

Pico won. That’s really all you need to know.

You want more?! OK, well, Portoroz second seed Anabel Medina Garrigues went out to qualifier Vesna Manasieva, just to make it really embarrassing if Dinara doesn’t win the thing, and Vera Dushevina had a good win over last week’s Palermo semifinalist Tathiana Garbin.

manasieva

dushevina

Alize Cornet won a match in Bad Gastein – ssssh! – but apparently it seems to be a rule that only one French slumper can win a match on any given day, as Gilles Simon lost in Hamburg to wildcard Daniel Brands. I promised I would honour this victory with photos of Brands. So … yeah.

International German Open Hamburg 2009brands

Auf gehts, Fragman.

It’s got to the point now where one doesn’t even bother speculating about a Gilles loss. One just sucks it up and grimly carries on.

Anyway, he wasn’t the only seed to fall in Hamburg today. Tommy Robredo lost to Ivan Navarro in straight sets, so, yeah, good luck winning anything for the rest of the year, Tommy. And Stanislas Wawrinka, also on his best surface, lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 62 64. I’d care, but I don’t. Did I mention Pico won?

A Bad Day to Be KK. Or CSN. Or British.

Posted by gauloises1 on July 20, 2009

Actually, that could be pretty much any day, couldn’t it?

Anyway, remember Kaia Kanepi? Remember when she went quite deep in Dubai and was quite good? No, me neither. She fell to Olga Govortsova 61 62, and Lucie Safarova accounted for token Tim Katie O’Brien. Still needs a sandwich though.

olga govortsova

safarova

Tatjana Malek accounted for Carla Suarez Navarro, the fifth seed in Bad Gastein. And it was a good day for the Germans in Hamburg, with no less than four making it through to the second round (the sole objection being Bjorn Phau). Wildcards Daniel Brands and Simon Greul had a particularly good day, accounting for Victor Crivoi and Janko Tipsarevic respectively. Auf gehts and all that.

fragman

This might be Brands. I’m honestly not sure.

Dina's Got a Brand New Bag

Posted by gauloises1 on July 20, 2009

New dress, anyway.

dinara

dinara2

Hmmm. I loved this on Sorana, but I don’t think the colours do anything for Dinara. Am I wrong?

It didn’t hamper her, anyway. She beat Tadeja Majeric 60 64 in the first round of the Slovenia Open.

WTA Week Ahead: Portoroz, Bad Gastein

Posted by gauloises1 on July 19, 2009

Portoroz

TENNIS-SLOVENIA-WTA-FINAL-ERRANI-GARRIGUES

Draw here.

No question who should win this tournament, as Dinara Safina is the top seed by quite some way. Really, there’s no-one who should trouble her in her half unless Kaia Kanepi unexpectedly finds some form again. Tathiana Garbin, who reached the semis in Palermo this week, is hanging around in her quarter, but really, yeah, I’m reaching. The bottom half of the draw is anchored by Lucie Safarova and Anabel Medina Garrigues. Safarova has token Tim Katie O’Brien in the first round, so look for the Czech in the quarters at least. Medina Garrigues has defending champion Sara Errani in her quarter, but Errani might well be knackered out from her exploits in Palermo last week.

I predict Safina vs. Medina Garrigues in the final, at which point this might get interesting.

Bad Gastein

parmentier

Draw here.

All I can say about this is that it’s probably not a good sign when Alize Cornet is the top seed.
