Mammoth Titlist … list

Posted by gauloises1 on July 19, 2010

I have to apologise for my protracted absence. Life stuff in the first half of the week followed by sustaining a silly and very painful eye injury on Wednesday which required me to lie in the dark being very bored … Well, that’s my excuse.

So who’s been winning while I’ve been away?

Bastad – ATP

Almagro continued his quest for universal popularity by beating Robin Soderling 75 36 62 for his sixth career title and first since Acapulco in 2009.

Bastad – WTA

Aravane Rezai beat Gisela Dulko 63 46 64 for her fourth career title and second this year. She’s now 4-0 in finals.

Budapest

Agnes Szavay defended her title, beating last year’s whipping woman Patty Schnyder 62 64.

Newport

While everyone else was playing Davis Cup last weekend, Mardy Fish won the soup thing.

Palermo

Quarterfinalist at Wimbledon and now defeater of Flavia Pennetta on home clay, Kaia Kanepi, ladies and gentlemen.

Prague

Second title in one post two weeks for Agnes Szavay, this time over Stepanova wedding guest Zahlalova Strycova, and she seems to have just about found her feet on clay for 2010. Never accused of good timing, our Agnes.

Stuttgart

A fifth career title for Montanes, conqueror of Federer earlier this year in Estoril, didn’t quite come the way he would have wanted after Gael Monfils turned his ankle at the end of the first set and was forced to retire 1-2 down in the second. Get better soon, Gael. Incidentally, five career titles and he doesn’t even get a look in on Davis Cup? Sometimes I wish I was Spanish.

WTA Sunday Titlists: Forza Flavia, Schiavs Fails

Posted by gauloises1 on July 19, 2009

Flavia Pennetta d. Sara Errani 61 62

flavia trophy

Flavia cruised over fellow Italian and defending champion Sara Errani to win her first ever title on home soil. And looked gorgeous. That’s really all there is to say. Go girl.

Sybille Bammer d. Francesca Schiavone 76(4) 62

bammer2

Quite the day today in Prague. First of all, the two finalists had to see off their semi-final opponents in held-over matches from yesterday.

benesovatimea

Which Bammer did in fine style, taking out Benesova (the remaining Czech hope) 60 75. Schiavone had a tougher time with Bacsinzsky, eventually prevailing 62 46 75. Whether that had much of an impact on her final performance I’m not sure, but it was a straight-sets win for Bammer for her first WTA title since A.D. 47. And then she brought her little daughter on again. Bless.

schiavs bammerschiavs tina bammer

Oh, and the Bondarenko sisters won. So expect a celebratory blog update on their boyfriends and the health of their dogs some time in the next few hours.

Saturday WTA Results: Palermo, Prague, Rain

Posted by gauloises1 on July 19, 2009

Semi-finals in Prague today were rained off after three games with Bammer leading Benesova 3-0, meaning that presumably there will be two matches tomorrow. Fun! They got the business done in Palermo though, with Flavia winning the clash of the Italians 61 61. She’ll meet defending champion Sara Errani in the finals after Errani defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld in three sets.

Friday WTA Results: Palermo, Prague

Posted by gauloises1 on July 18, 2009

A good day of action in Prague and Palermo today, and we have our semifinalists.

In Palermo, top seed Francesca Schiavone made short work of Kateryna Bondarenko, who was sliced, diced and pulled about in a way that was painful to see. It was more fun, in a hideous sort of way, watching the three-set epic between Sybille Bammer and Lucie Hradecka; three hours, over one hundred unforced errors, and fifteen breaks of serve. At the end, after Bammer managed to hold it together to serve out the match at her 4679th attempt, her little daughter ran on the court to congratulate her, which somehow made it all worth it. Qualifier Timea Bacsinszky put out Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets, and Benesova avoided a potential banana skin by defeating the fifteen year-old wildcard Zarina Diyas. (I was, by the way, reasonably impressed by Diyas; great forehand and a reasonable understanding of the game.)

benesova

flavia

How can JJ not still be with Reebok? Imagine the fun if they’d started cutting bits out of her clothes. She’d have whipped out a pair of scissors and done it herself on changeovers.

In Palermo, Flavia Pennetta defeated Aravane Rezai in two tight sets. She’ll be joined in the semis by Garbin and Errani, with Groenefeld the sole representative of the rest of the world after Schnyder retired due to the whiteness of her mile.

Thursday WTA Results: Palermo, Prague

Posted by gauloises1 on July 17, 2009

Nothing too earth-shattering today. Benesova, Bondarenko and Bacsinzky all booked their place in the quarter-finals, and wild card Zarina Diyas beat local favourite Petra Kvitova. In Palermo, one local favourite Alberta Brianti fell, but Sara Errani carried on to the quarters, along with Schnyder and Shvedova, and qualifier Arantxa Rus lost to Anna-Lena Groenefeld 76(5) 63. So I still don’t know who she is. Will I ever find out?!

Wednesday WTA Results: Prague, Palermo

Posted by gauloises1 on July 15, 2009

Easy business for the top seeds in Palermo today, with Francesca Schiavone, Sybille Bammer and Carla Suarez Navarro all moving through to the next round without dropping a set. Seventh seed Lucie Hradecka had a tougher time of it, but prevailed over Karolina Sprem in three, going for a little lie down to celebrate.
