Foetal T-Rex Offhand Presumably Intact

Posted by gauloises1 on November 19, 2009

Sam Querrey is on the mend after his freak glass table accident and has started practicing again. Yay!

I thought this was sweet:

Querrey heard from Andy Roddick and James Blake after the accident, but he was most excited about an e-mail from Federer wishing him well.

“That was the greatest,” he said, smiling. “I was so happy. It made my day. It was almost worth it.”

Glasses = Sexy

Posted by gauloises1 on October 13, 2009

What is it with tennis players wearing glasses?! Sam Querrey is so fit in this. I don’t even care what he’s saying.

Also, I hesitate to bring this up, but bees don’t bite.

The Withdrawal Method: People Who Sit on Glass Tables …

Posted by gauloises1 on September 28, 2009

… shouldn’t play tennis for four to six weeks. Or at least that’s the word from Bangkok, where Sam Querrey required emergency surgery after a freak accident that involved sitting on a glass table and then falling through.

First Pico manages to incapacitate himself with a cup, now this. Doesn’t the ATP have a health and safety person?

New Haven: Wozniacki, Verdasco, Rain

Posted by gauloises1 on August 30, 2009

So rain played absolute havoc with the last couple of days in New Haven at the overly-sponsored tournament presented by capitalism. Or is that the one that’s about to happen in New York?

Anyway, Caroline Wozniacki successfully defended her title, beating Elena Vesnina 62 64 in the final.

Mind you, Vesnina beat Momo in the semis, so we don’t feel too bad for her. Still a great run for the Russian.

ves caro

Also a great weekend for the Adidas Player Development Program, which works with three out of the four finalists and had a hand in both fist-pumping titlists.

Fernando Verdasco picked up his first title of the year, beating Igor Andreev and then Sam Querrey back-to-back in two tight matches. Great stuff.

Point of interest: he apparently had 12 family members travelling with him, many of whom were wearing ‘FeVer’ hats. Shudder.

Tough night for Querrey, who demolished Jose Acasuso in straights but started fatally slow in the final. He came back well in the second set, recovering from being on the brink of going a double break down to take it to a tiebreak in which he led for most of the time, but Verdasco was better in the end.

Never mind. On to New York.

New Haven: Have I Mentioned I Love Momo?

Posted by gauloises1 on August 28, 2009

You have to hand it to Sam Querrey. While everyone was still milling around going, “Really? Sam Querrey won the US Open series? … Huh,” he went out and scored what was probably the second biggest win of his career, coming from behind (heh) to beat Nikolay Davydenko in three sets. Nice.

Is success making him more attractive, or is it just me? Serious q.

Verdasco trampled over Jurgen Melzer and Andreev overcame Horseface in three sets for the win.

Sadly the best photo I could find to recognise a true NB hero. Also the only one.

But all is not lost! Everybody’s least favourite-ish Argy, Chucho, took out Florent Serra 75 64 to book his spot in the semis. All you people who have in the past called him a useless sack of crap should be ashamed of yourselves. *wags finger*

Has his uses.

And on the vaginal side, Caroline Wozniacki and Flavia Pennetta progressed in straight sets to set up a nice semi-final clash. The other semi-final will be between Elena Vesnina, who dismissed translucent fish Anna Chakvetadze, and one Momo, who may or may not have been awesome in a three-set win over Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Yep, she was definitely awesome.

I didn’t see almost all the first set (turned it on just in time to see Momo awesomely save a set point and then go on to take the tiebreak), but it’s safe to say that throughout the match Kuznetsova had her chances to win it. I just never felt like she would, though. It’s odd, but even after Momo lost her way in the second set, I was certain she’d win in the end.

Maybe it’s just that her notoriously fragile mind is in fact a steel trap compared to Sveta’s, I don’t know. Still it’s so good to see her win a tough match, as always.

Marry me, Momo.

Querrey Clinches US Open Series

With his straight sets victory over Bjorn Phau last night, Sam Querrey has officially won the US Open series. Murray finishes second and JMDP finishes third.

Well done Sam.

New Haven: Momo Wins. That Is All.

Posted by gauloises1 on August 25, 2009

Momo beat Ai Sugiyama in straight sets to advance at the Pilot Pen. This is the only result I really care about.

Elsewise, Kuznetsova survived a tough three-set battle with Zheng Jie, Vesnina beat Dulko, and two qualifiers I quite like – Magdalena Rybarikova and Yanina Wickmayer – upset Francesca Schiavone and Alisa Kleybanova respectively.

L.A.: Third Time Querrey

Posted by gauloises1 on August 3, 2009

In his third straight final, Sam Querrey finally did the business, beating qualifier Carsten Ball 64 36 61 for the L.A. title.

querrey trophy

And no, I don’t know what happened in the second set.

sam finger bite

He’s been catching a bit of flack for the behaviour of the Samurai, and I can see why. They do sound somewhat lacking in manners.

Still, I love Sam. How can you not?

L.A.: The Future’s Querrey

Posted by gauloises1 on August 2, 2009

Bad news for irefusetotellyou and indeed all fans of lustrously-coiffed Argies. Horseface went down to Carsten Ball in the first semifinal.

But all is not lost as Sam Querrey beat Tommy Haas in straight sets to advance to his third straight final.

Nobody likes you.

Haas paid grudging tribute to the “definitely improved” Querrey after the match. Sam, incidentally, is the first American to reach three straight ATP finals since Roddick did it back in 2004.

Still an enormous geek though.
