Friday ATP Results: Bastad, Stuttgart

Posted by gauloises1 on July 18, 2009

And we have most of our semifinalists!

picovinciguerra

Give it up for Andreas Vinciguerra, ranked 460 in the world. He thrilled the home crowds with a three-set victory over fourth seed Jurgen Melzer. Who would have thought Sweden would have had two homeboys in the semis, as Rob Soderling out-thwacked Nicholas Almagro? Tommy Robredo dismissed my man Teimuraz 64 60 – grrr – and the match of the day (at least from my perspective) turned out to a bit of a damp squib. Fernando Verdasco was listless and struggling from the beginning with a tight right calf muscle, presumably the result of exhaustion after having played fourteen sets in Davis Cup and an epic match with ol’ Krazy Koellerer the previous day. It actually would have been over much quicker, had not Pico gone inexplicably soft in the head seeing how much Verdasco was struggling and started hitting the ball right back to him. Ah well. I’m sure Nando will be fully recovered and ruining my life in no time at all.

The biggest shock of the day was Fabio Fognini – who has eerily grown to resemble Ming the Merciless – defeating second seed Nikolay Davydenko in three sets.

fabshanescu

Fabs played a solid match, but it was fairly dreadful stuff from Kolya, who just couldn’t find his range with any consistency. Hanescu beat Sidorenko in straight sets, but sadly rain interrupted play, so the winner of Kiefer-Kubot and Zverev-Chardy will presumably have to play two matches. Tough stuff.

Gilles Goes for a Ride

Posted by gauloises1 on July 17, 2009

So before getting knocked out of the tournament at a ridiculously early stage, Gilles managed to find the time to tour the Mercedez-Benz factory in Stuttgart.

Bonus footage of Kolya being adorable and speaking German:

My favourite bit is where he peers intently into the engine.

Thursday ATP Results: Bastad, Stuttgart

Posted by gauloises1 on July 16, 2009

Some tough matches in Bastad today. Verdasco survived a match point in a three-set victory over Daniel “lethal like” Koellerer and local wildcard Andreas Vinciguerra came back from the brink of defeat to subdue Canas. Things were much simpler for Melzer and Pico, who had a typically bizarre scoreline but still managed to put out Crivoi in straight sets.

Sadly Gilles’ woes continued, losing to Zverev (who also beat him in Rome). And Lukas Kubot is questing for braaaaaaaaaaaaains again. He beat PEHK 62 64.

Wednesday ATP Results: Stuttgart, Bastad

Posted by gauloises1 on July 16, 2009

I am so, so, so over the Marat Safin farewell tour. He lost to Nicholas Almagro 63 76(6) in Bastad today.

safin

After the match, Safin said “I’m tired of the tour, tired of staying at hotels and tired of travelling…I’ve had enough now”. Obviously feeling like he hadn’t underlined the point enough, he replied to a question about whether he would be interested in a coaching career by announcing “I’m tired of everything that has to do with racquets and balls.”

In typical Marat style, however, he has to mix up the irritating with being awesome. His post-match on-court interview was a delight, especially when he claimed to have given “the Swedish people” “a big gift” when he lost to Johansson in the finals of the Australian Open. Cue mildly confused clapping.

Soderling and Robredo both won but Frederico Gil fell to Gimeno-Traver. And Teimuraz Gabashvili put out Bjorn Phau. That’s right. He won another match.

In Stuttgart, the most interesting result was probably Paul-Henri Mathieu beating former champion Youzhny. Yeah, you know it’s a dull day when Mathieu is the biggest story. Oh, and in a continuation of today’s ‘Marat’ theme, lucky loser Sidorenko – last seen losing at Roland Garros to Marat – beat Oscar Hernandez in three sets. We may have another zombie there.

ATP Tuesday Results: Bastad, Stuttgart

Posted by gauloises1 on July 14, 2009

Mixed fortunes for the Davis Cup survivors today, as Jose Acasuso and Andreas Beck (who both lost rubbers over the weekend) were dumped out of Stuttgart by Jeremy Chardy and Simon Greul respectively, and Tomas Berdych – who has a right to be exhausted if anyone does – lost in straight sets to Nicholas Kiefer, 63 63.

kiefer

On the other hand, Pico came back strongly in Bastad, beating eighth-seeded compatriot Maximo Gonzalez in three sets. Guillermo Canas took out Grigor “still learning” Dmitrov, qualifier Potito “serious business” Starace beat Julien Benneteau, and adorable Bjorn Phau beat the Roland Garros junior champion, Daniel Berta.

Tennis, Swedish Open

We’ll be keeping an eye on this one. Unfortunate tongue placement aside.

ATP Monday Results: Bastad, Stuttgart

Posted by gauloises1 on July 13, 2009

Vinciguerra_monday

A thrill for the home crowds in Bastad today, as homeboy Andreas Vinciguerra defeated sixth seed Florent Serra in three sets to advance to the second round. (Serra, according to naughty, being one of the sport’s master berators). Seventh seed Christophe Rochus also fell to unsung YFB fave Teimuraz Gabashvili in three sets including a breadstick and a bagel. Fear the Basher.

In Stuttgart, Nikolay Davydenko survived a tough day and shook off some rust to beat Ivan Navarro in three tight sets. And Kubot continued his quest for braaaaains. Expect to see him in the final, gnawing mindlessly through some luckless player’s skull in search of the yummy goo within.

ATP Week Ahead: Bastad, Stuttgart

Posted by gauloises1 on July 13, 2009

Bastad

robredo

Draw here.

It looks fun, I think. The top four seeds (Verdasco, Robredo, Melzer and Soderling) all have a bye through the first round, but there’s plenty of interest there; Almagro vs. Safin, Teimuraz Gabashvili vs. seventh seed Christophe Rochus (second round Teimuraz, COME ON), and an all-Argie clash between Pico and Maximo Gonzalez. Ordinarily I would say that Pico has a nice shot at the quarters at least, but given what he’s just been through … maybe not. The Serra-Melzer quarter also includes Grigor Dimitrov and Frederico Gil, both of whom have qualifiers in the first round, so that could be a nice potential run for one. Still, I’m betting on Soderling or defending champion Robredo to take this title.

Stuttgart

TENNIS-GERMANY/

Was it really only a year ago?! *has quality moment of nostalgic remembrance*

Ah, memories. Well, JMDP’s not coming back to defend his title (which I think is not a bad decision, although I welcome differing opinions from more knowledgeable people, i.e. anybody who reads this blog or even just wanders through to try to sell me Viagra). Still, the draw’s OK, and it’s here.

Gilles is the top seed and he has a tough quarter that includes Garcia-Lopez and either Jeremy Chardy or Chucho (a first-rounder to watch). The second quarter is where the DC bleeders really are, with Berdych facing Kiefer in the first and Kohlschreiber and Beck lurking. I honestly don’t see second seed Kolya having too many problems, and the third quarter is the token ‘WTF?’ quarter (sorry, Victor Hanescu fans, of which I happen to know there are some). I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a Kolya-Berdych final. I’m just saying.
