Thursday WTA Results: Kimiko, Kimiko

Posted by gauloises1 on September 24, 2009

Sorry about skipping yesterday. I was somewhat drunk.

But anyway! Probably the biggest news from today is that Kimiko Date-Krumm, who is coming up rapidly on her 39th birthday, is into the quarterfinals courtesy of upsetting Alisa Kleybanova, 46 76(3) 63, coming back from 5-2 down in the second and saving a match point on Kleybanova’s serve. Great stuff.

kdk

Defending champion Maria Kirilenko is also through when Francesca Schiavone was forced to retire, and Dushevina and Daniela Hantuchova complete the line-up. Pas mal, Seoul. Pas mal.

In Tashkent, Shahar Peer kept her winning streak going and Olga Govortsova also had a straight sets win for the quarters. Qualifier Alexandra Panova and her desserty surname knocked out seventh seed Patricia Mayr, and local fave Akgul Amandurova beat Bychkova.

Tuesday WTA Results: Sorana! (Not In a Good Way.)

Posted by gauloises1 on September 22, 2009

So I’m starting to think Anna-Lena Groenefeld has it in for me. She beat my favourite player in Seoul, Sorana Cirstea, who also happened to be the fourth seed.

sorana

Other than that notable exception, all the seeds progressed, with Medina Garrigues, Schiavone, Kleybanova, Pavlyuchenkova, Dushevina and Bammer recording victories at the expense of Urszula Radwanska, Katarina Srebotnik and Ekaterina Makarova among others. Magdalena Rybarikova knocked out last week’s Guangzhou finalist Alberta Brianti, and unseeded defending champion Maria Kirilenko had a tough time of it against Sophie Ferguson but came through in three sets.

makiri

In Tashkent, seeds Shvedova, Mayr and Niculescu all recorded straight set victories, with third seed Raluca Olaru falling to Ekaterina Bychkova. Oh, and two locals – Akgul Amandurova and wildcard Nigina Abduraimova – both won. So that was nice.

WTA Week Ahead: Seoul, Tashkent

Posted by gauloises1 on September 21, 2009

Seoul

makiri seoul

Draw here.

Tough ask for defending champion Maria Kirilenko in the Hansol Korea Open this week. She’s unseeded and sandwiched between Francesca Schiavone and Vera Dushevina, the third and seventh seeds (assuming Dushevina can beat Urszula Radwanska, her first round opponent). Top seed Daniela Hantuchova has a much softer quarter which includes a first-round match between Katerina Srebotnik and Alisa Kleybanova. Fun. The third quarter is definitely all about the young ‘uns, with slumping Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Sorana Cirstea – foregoing the defence of her Tashkent title – as the seeds, although Cirstea has a tricky first-round match with Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who can be dangerous. And the fourth quarter is just madness, with first rounds that include Bammer-Makarova, Rybarikova against the Guangzhou finalist Alberta Brianti, and Petkovic-Medina Garrigues. Madness, I tell you.

Tashkent

Uzbekistan Tashkent Open

Draw here.

Funny to think that last year the final was between Sorana and Licky, and I didn’t really know or care who either was. Anyway, the draw this year’s a bit less sexy, with Yaroslava Shvedova (JJ’s US Open conqueror, lest we forget) and Shahar Peer the top two seeds, although whether Peer will make it after her Guangzhou exploits remains to be seen. Yeah … I’m going to struggle to get excited about this one.
