So That Happened.

Posted by gauloises1 on October 6, 2009

JMDP lost 64 64 in the first round of Tokyo this morning, to qualifier Eduardo Roger-Vasselin. I didn’t see it, but it doesn’t look pretty.

After the match, JMDP said that he was suffering from jet lag and some sort of stomach problem (dude, just STOP going to Tokyo) but that he wasn’t going to make excuses for the loss – thus using a different definition of making excuses than I was previously aware of.

Congratulations to Roger-Vasselin though, who’s one of those people whose name I always see in qualifying draws but who rarely seems to make it to the main draw. Huge win for him.

So … we’ve got a first round loss to someone ranked 189th in the world. Is this going to become a thing from now on? Because … OK.

Tokyo: Bambi, Wawrinka, Chiudinelli Through

Posted by gauloises1 on October 5, 2009

Yeah, I couldn’t think of a funny post title for this one. Anyway, not too much happened in Tokyo today. Gael Monfils dominated Turkey’s finest Marsel Ilhan 62 64, and qualifier Marco Chiudinelli upset Dudi Sela – who hasn’t been doing too well of late if memory serves. Not that that can’t be turned around, as Stanislas Wawrinka overcame whatever morning sickness has been bothering him in the past few months to beat John Isner 64 64.

Oh, and the GOAT doubles pairing of Pico and Steps lost. But it was 50% to Rosco Hutchins, so that’s kind of OK.

Elf plays tomorrow!

Domo Arigato, Mr. del Potro

Posted by gauloises1 on October 5, 2009

I had to, right? You understand that I had to. Anyway, Daniel was kind enough to link to this video of JMDP practicing with Pico in preparation for the Rakuten Japan Open.

I refuse to draw any conclusions about performance from a practice video. But can you believe how many people are there to watch?! The under-the-radar days are definitely over.

Anyway, just because we’re a multimedia service and JMDP is, well, hot, have some photos.

ATP Week Ahead: Tokyo, Beijing

Posted by gauloises1 on October 5, 2009

Tokyo

berdych tokyo

Draw here.

Well, Elf’s back. And so is Tomas Berdych, the man who beat him 61 64 in last year’s final to take the trophy. (Journalistic impartiality compels me to point out that JMDP was ill.) If the seeding holds, they’re due to meet in the … never, actually, but they could meet in the semi-finals. JMDP kicks off with a qualifier, and may have to face either Jurgen Melzer (perennially attracted to him in the draws, and indeed who could blame him?) or a certain Horseface in the second round, before probably-Hewitt in the quarters and probably either Berdych or Simon in the semi-finals.

Not that it’s all about JMDP, of course, although all eyes will be on him. (Well, all my eyes.) Also in action: Thomaz Bellucci, who is due to face Mikhail Youzhny in a first-round that could be either cracking or totally limp; Stanislas Wawrinka, who’s drawn Isner in the first round in a match you probably don’t want when you’re somewhat slumping; and Gael Monfils, who kicks off against Turkey’s finest Marsel Ilhan and will face either Marco Chiudinelli or Dudi Sela in the second round. The bottom quarter is absolutely loaded, with Stepanek vs. Gulbis, Pico vs. Garcia-Lopez, Gasquet vs. Petzchner, and Tsonga vs. Zverev the first-round match-ups. All of which is to say: fun! Go Elf! And don’t drink the water.

Beijing

roddick beijing

Draw here.

Now this is loaded. Top seed Nadal kicks off against Marcos Baghdatis, with a probable meeting with James Blake in the second round. Marat Safin plays Chucho in the first round, with the victor meeting either David Ferrer or Gonzo. A probable semi-final against Davydenko awaits, with the Russian having a fairly easy route; I don’t see either Kohlschreiber or Karlovic giving him too much trouble in the second round, and much as I love Marin, I’ve had too much experience of his inconsistency to bet against him even getting through a first round against Igor Andreev.

The bottom half of the draw is anchored by Djokovic and Soderling, with Roddick and Verdasco tucked in there too. Robin has a tough draw, faced with Chardy in the first round and probably-Robredo in the second, so I’d look for defending champion Roddick to come out of that quarter. Verdasco will have to contend with either Nicolas Almagro or Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round, but I would still expect him to play Djokovic in the quarter-finals. It’s far from inconceivable that we could get a Nole-Nadal final. Which would just be all sorts of good stuff. Fingers crossed.

Tokyo: The Last Goodbye

Posted by gauloises1 on October 4, 2009

With her Tokyo tournament at an end, Ai Sugiyama has officially retired. So look for her back on the tour in about 15 months.

ai3

Just kidding. I think this retirement might actually stick. It’s sad in a way that she couldn’t end on a win, as she and partner Daniela Hantuchova fell to Alisa Kleybanova and Francesca Schiavone, 64 62. But it looks like the match was played in great spirit and that those present took the opportunity to honour Ai, which is lovely.

ai sugiyama daniela hantuchova tokyo final doubles retirement

Poor Daniela. A friend of mine had a pair of dogs, one of whom died recently, and he was telling me that the younger one still wanders around the house looking for the dead one. This is my mental image of Dani at doubles sign-in from now on.

Not sure what Francesca’s doing here, but I’m going to assume it’s a nice gesture.

Really bye now, Ai.

Tokyo: The Return of Shazzilla

Posted by gauloises1 on October 3, 2009

Congratulations to Maria Sharapova, who won her first title since Amelia Island in April 2008 in Tokyo last night after Jelena Jankovic retired.

shazza2

Shame that the match had to go this way. I didn’t see it, but reportedly Jankovic was 5-2 down in the first set when she took a medical timeout to get her right arm examined by the trainer. Jankovic lost the next two points and then retired.

“It’s disappointing,” said Sharapova, who had arthroscopic surgery to repair a rotator cuff in her right shoulder nearly a year ago. “It’s toward the end of the year and there are a lot of injuries so I wish Jelena a speedy recovery.”

(source)

jj shazza

Feel the love.

Great stuff for Maria though. This win will put her back inside the WTA top fifteen. I think Shazza is officially back.

I wonder how much this victory has to do with the fact that she’s gone back to her former, unabbreviated service motion, which she’s obviously much more comfortable with. But will her shoulder hold up under it? And will JJ now withdraw from Beijing, where she and Sharapova could quite conceivably meet in the third round? Questions upon questions.
