Toronto: Cherchez La Demmy

Posted by gauloises1 on August 24, 2009

Congratulations to Elena Dementieva, everybody’s favourite headcasey Russian. Well, she’s got to be in the top five. Anyway, she beat Maria Sharapova for the Toronto title. Niiiice.

lena5

Very nice run for Sharapova to the finals though. I believe with this win she will be up to no. 30 in the rankings or thereabouts, which means she will be seeded for the US Open. Now who out of the top 8 wants this in the third round?

shazza

Probably about the same number that want Kim Clijsters.

This is a great win for Dementieva though. I choose to honour it in the best way I know how … picspam.

lena7

“Y, God?! Y????!!!!”

lena6

If there was a powderpuff somewhere in this shot, it would be everything you need to know about Elena Dementieva’s tennis career in one photograph.

I’m just saying.

lena4

How do you like your crystal eggs in the morning?

lena

I like mine with a kiss.

Toronto: Quarter-finals Set

Posted by gauloises1 on August 21, 2009

Well, the second, fourth, fifth and fourteenth seeds will feature in the Toronto quarter-finals, but that’s it. Second seed Serena Williams will take on qualifier Lucie Safarova after they both scored straight sets wins over Alona Bondarenko and Zheng Jie respectively.

safs

serena

Elena Dementieva was taken to three sets by Shahar Peer but survived. She’ll play Samantha Stosur, who rolled over Virginie Razzano 63 61. If both play well, this match could be amazing.

sam

demmy

Jelena Jankovic put an end to Kim Clijsters’ run (YES!), coming back from the loss of the first set to win in three. She’ll play Alisa Kleybanova, who defeated Aravane Rezai. I hope JJ doesn’t get hit off the court.

jj

And the final quarter-final will feature Agnieszka Radwanska,  who defeated qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko in straight sets, against Maria Sharapova who won the clash of the back-from-injury decisively over Vera Zvonareva. It was Agnieszka if memory serves who knocked Maria out of the US Open back in 2007. I wonder if she can do it again? The Raddest ‘Wanska hasn’t been beyond the quarterfinals stage of a tournament all year. This could be her moment.

Toronto: Shazza Through, Safarova Beats Ivanovic

Posted by gauloises1 on August 20, 2009

Not too many other noteworthy results from yesterday in Toronto. Sharapova, still plagued by double faults, came through a three-set match with Sybille Bammer, and Lucie Sarova defeated Ana Ivanovic in three sets in a match which I hear was of high quality (which bodes well for Ana fans).

Toronto: Azarenka, Safina, Wozniacki Out

Posted by gauloises1 on August 20, 2009

Somewhat of a top-seed cull going on in Toronto, isn’t there? Azarenka lost in three sets to Clijsters, Wozniacki was bounced in straight sets by Zheng Jie Jie Zheng, and Dinara Safina bafflingly lost to Aravane Rezai.

dinaravika

Of the three results, I’m by far the most surprised at Dinara. I hear she served something on the order of 17 double faults (I stopped counting Azarenka’s), and what I did catch of her performance was pretty much a disgrace. Zeljko Krajan actually left the court before the end of the match, according to my commentators, which is not cool. You should stick with your player no matter what or bloody well get out there and do better yourself. So sayeth I.

Good day for these ladies though.

Toronto: Kim Tops Tim, Venus in Bond-age

Posted by gauloises1 on August 19, 2009

Hahahaha … no? Anyway, Venus Williams lost in three sets today to Kateryna Bondarenko. Yeah. This girl.

kbond

Bondarenko actually played a good match, doing particularly well to hang in there after losing the first set 16, and serving out the match at the first time of asking. But really, there’s no way that Venus should ever have lost to her unless she was on particularly dreadful form, and funnily enough …

venus

I’m beginning to wonder if even the ‘Slam factor’ will be enough to rescue Venus’ play from the depths it seems to have plummeted to since Wimbledon. Anyway, well done to Bondarenko. At least she was pretty cool about it.

kbond2

Or not. In other news, the Kimmy Komeback continues, with the Belgian rolling over Elena Baltacha (she’s brave, you know) in straight sets.

baltacha

Seriously, how did she even get in this tournament?

Azarenka, Pennetta, Ivanovic and Cibulkova all recorded wins today too.
