DC: Kick His Haas, Gonzo

Posted by gauloises1 on August 7, 2009

Please could Tommy Haas just lose? I’m sure all my post titles about him are getting rather reheated by now.

Anyway, he further proved he is pure evil by beating Boss tonight, 75 26 61. I think Boss’ jet lag from Umag might finally have caught up with him. Anyway, I’m sure he’s not done for the summer.

Haas will meet Gonzo next, who overcame Wayne Odesnik 62 64. I love Gonzo’s game face. He always looks like someone’s just whispered something really shocking into his ear.

She said WHAT?!

Robin Soderling beat Marc Gicquel in three sets (not sure what happened there) to set up a quarterfinal with Elf – more on that later – and Ivo Karlovic put an end to another good run for Somdev Devvarman. He’ll face the winner of Roddick-Querrey, which is underway at the moment.

DC: Boss, Rusty, Roddick Through

Posted by gauloises1 on August 6, 2009

Sad news. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is out at the hands of John Isner.

And he was looking so cute, too.

But all is not lost. A-Rod is back and, what’s more, he’s wearing a teatowel!

He beat Benjamin Becker in straight sets to set up a nice third-round clash with Sam Querrey, who beat Ignor Kunitsyn. Gonzo, Soderling and Karlovic all progressed, and Philip Petzchner knocked out Mardy Fish in a result that made me smile. Oh, and Boss beat Robredo 63 62.

In more troubling news, Dudi Sela took it to three but couldn’t quite get it done. So it’ll be Elf vs. Rusty tonight for a place in the quarter-finals.

My man’s going to lose, isn’t he?

DC: Elf Through, Marin Out

Posted by gauloises1 on August 5, 2009

OK, first of all, what’s with dropping a set to Lu? What exactly is up with that? Oh, well. At least he won.

Washington Tennis

And WHAT is up with that “cut here” line across his chest? It’s like the groping shirt, but if you want to dismember him. Much less fun.

Boss beat Nico Lapentti in three sets (including a bagel) and Ernie maintained his proud streak of second round losses. The big shock of the day was Somdev Devvarman knocking out my man Marin in straight sets. Somdev Devvarman. Straight sets.

I blame the girlfriend.

ATP Week Ahead: D.C. Baby

Posted by gauloises1 on August 2, 2009

elf washington

How was this a year ago? How?!

Draw here.

Let’s not sugarcoat it, this is one unlikely title defence. Just to put things in perspective, last year the top eight seeds were: Roddick, JMDP himself, Lopez, Haas, Fish, Safin, Gicquel and Granollers. This year, we have: Roddick, JMDP, Tsonga, Gonzo, Soderling, Cilic, Robredo and Berdych.

And in further evidence that the draw gods hate me? JMDP has a probable match with Lleyton Hewitt in the third round, to be followed by probably-Soderling in the quarters and probably-Gonzo in the semis. If he gets that far. Which he won’t. And given the parlous state of U.S. tennis coverage, that means I probably won’t even get to see him this week! Hooray!

Pretending to look at the other side of the draw, it’s oddly well-organised along national lines; Roddick and Querrey could meet in the third round, as could Karlovic and Cilic. If Tsonga can avoid falling to another huge server in Isner like he did at Wimbledon, his draw looks pretty nice for the semis, and there could be a Gulbis-Berdych second round in which the cover will get well and truly smacked off the ball. See? I pretended to care about non-Elf-related matters for a second. That’s the best I can do.

Basically, I’m thinking that I’m going to keep my expectations as low as possible. Whatever, Washington. You’re no big deal.
