Tokyo: Gulbis Makes It Past Second Round

Posted by gauloises1 on October 9, 2009

Crack open the Latvian champagne, he finally did it – won two main draw matches in a row for the first time in 2009. OK, so it came courtesy of a withdrawal from Pico when Gulbis was leading 64 41, but even Ernie wouldn’t have messed up that scoreline, right? Right?

There’s a gaping hole in this photo where a comforting Elf should be.

Ernie will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals, after Jo topped Richard Gasquet (pfft, who hasn’t?) in three sets.

Daddy cool.

Up at the top of the draw, it’ll be Mikhail Youzhny facing Berdych after he knocked out third seed Gilles Simon 64 in the fifth. Lleyton Hewitt managed to subdue ancient trickster and odour-removal spray Fabrice Santoro 61 in the third, and Eduardo Roger-Vasselin of ruining-my-week fame beat Melzer in three sets. Which I find oddly comforting.

So That Happened.

Posted by gauloises1 on October 6, 2009

JMDP lost 64 64 in the first round of Tokyo this morning, to qualifier Eduardo Roger-Vasselin. I didn’t see it, but it doesn’t look pretty.

After the match, JMDP said that he was suffering from jet lag and some sort of stomach problem (dude, just STOP going to Tokyo) but that he wasn’t going to make excuses for the loss – thus using a different definition of making excuses than I was previously aware of.

Congratulations to Roger-Vasselin though, who’s one of those people whose name I always see in qualifying draws but who rarely seems to make it to the main draw. Huge win for him.

So … we’ve got a first round loss to someone ranked 189th in the world. Is this going to become a thing from now on? Because … OK.
