Stuttgart Results: Azarenka, Alize out

Posted by gauloises1 on April 29, 2009

So it was a fun day today in Stuttgart. The only big upset was Victoria Azarenka, who got bounced by Gisela Dulko, 4 and 3. Considering that Victoria had won their previous meetings easily, this was a big surprise, but it was a fairly dire performance. She looked incredibly uncomfortable moving on the surface, which was another surprise; I don’t know how she beat Carla Suarez Navarro moving that badly. Regardless, Dulko played clever, careful and precise tennis. A well-deserved win for her.

I don’t know whether Cornet losing early is actually an upset at this point, but she fell to Hantuchova 3 and 1. Sveta made it through despite a determined effort in the second set from Petkovic, and Lisicki played a very good match against Schnyder – although the best part of that was definitely Patty’s hilariously stone-faced reaction to her husband’s pep talk. And JJ absolutely cruised over Cibulkova. In fairness, Domi was hampered by a left abductor strain, but I don’t know if it would have made any difference; JJ was calm, confident and hitting with purpose. Lovely to see.

Fes Preview: Half-Assed

Posted by gauloises1 on April 27, 2009

I’ll level with you. It’s late, I’m drunk, and I can’t find the tournament website.

So … here’s the draw.

With last year’s champion Gisela Dulko absent, it’s anchored by Anabel Medina Garrigues and Alisa Kleybanova.

AMG’s half also features Urszula Radwanska, Hackney’s finest Anne Keothavong, rising young thing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Shahar Peer. (As well as insane goth clown Aravane Rezai, who’s always good for a laugh.)

Kleybanova’s half includes Maria Kirilenko, Roberta Vinci, and Ekaterina Makarova. So unless Vinci can put a good run together, I’m thinking Kleybanova has the easiest route to the finals.

So … enjoy! And insert your own Rory Gilmore reference, because I can’t think of one right now.
