D Cup: Chile 1 – 4 Czech Republic

Posted by gauloises1 on July 12, 2010

Er, I have no idea what happened here. I didn’t see any of it. I know that Nicolas Massu asked to be tapped for Saturday’s doubles to make up for his performance on Friday. How’d that work out for you, Nicolas?

Huge effort from Ivo Minar, Lukas Dlouhy and Jan Hajek to take a Berdworm-less Czech Republic into the semi-finals. As for Chile … well, they really need Gonzo, don’t they? And so do we all.

R1 – I.MINAR (CZE) def. N.MASSU (CHI)
6-0  6-2  6-3
R2 – J.HAJEK (CZE) def. P.CAPDEVILLE (CHI)

R3 – L.DLOUHY / J.HAJEK (CZE) def. J.AGUILAR / N.MASSU (CHI)

R4 – J.AGUILAR (CHI) def. L.DLOUHY (CZE)

D Cup Final: Domination

Posted by gauloises1 on December 7, 2009

Spain 5, Czech Republic 0

Rafael Nadal d. Tomas Berdych, 75 60 62

Well, hello there, Rafa. Nice to see you.

Big statement from Rafa in his penultimate match of the year. Can we stop with all the ‘Rafa is done’ talk now? He obviously thinks he isn’t, and that’s the only opinion that really matters:

I am lucky to play tennis. Is my hobby and at the same time my job. So for me is not very difficult wake up every day and practice hard. Always the motivation is important, wake up every day with the goal to improve something. The day when I wake up and I don’t feel this thing, I going to play golf or another thing.

David Ferrer d. Radek Stepanek, 16 26 64 64 86

Oh, Ferru. You little five-set warrior, you. One of my favourite matches of last year was watching him come back from 1-2 down against Roddick in the semifinals (a match that also ended 8-6 in the third). I didn’t get to see this one, but he basically clinched the tie with his comeback victory, ensuring that Navratil was forced to tap Berdych and Stepanek for the doubles, leaving them exhausted even if they managed to keep the tie alive into Sunday. (Which they didn’t.)

And of course the cheering!Boss photoage was just a bonus:

Feliciano Lopez / Fernando Verdasco d. Tomas Berdych / Radek Stepanek 76(7) 75 62

You kind of knew it was going to end up this way.

I don’t know what it is with Lopez, Verdasco and Davis Cup, but whatever it is, it seems to work. They handed Berdych and Stepanek their first ever Davis Cup doubles defeat, and they did it to clinch the tie and the defense of the trophy. Cue the celebrations that slashers love …

The dead rubbers were also efficiently wrapped up by Spain, with Nadal beating Hajek, 63 64, and Ferrer beating Dlouhy, 64 62.

Really tough weekend for the Czechs, but they’ve done amazingly to get this far. Spain just have too many good players who have the ability to rise to the Davis Cup occasion. Once Ferrer beat Stepanek, it was really all over bar the shouting, hugging, champagne-spraying and trophy-biting …

So that’s the Davis Cup done and dusted for 2009, remaining firmly in the hands of Spain. I do just want to say how pleased I am for Jewell, AmyLu, Rafadoc and the other Rafa/Armada fans who comment here and have not had the best time of late … hope you’re smiling now 🙂

D Cup: Draw & OOP

Posted by gauloises1 on December 3, 2009

And so it begins.

Rafael Nadal vs. Tomas Berdych

H2H: 5-3. Berdych’s last victory over Nadal came in 2006 and Rafa has never lost to Berdych on clay.

David Ferrer vs. Radek Stepanek

H2H: 3-3 (1-1 on clay).

Something of a surprise to see Ferrer, last seen withdrawing with a hamstring injury in Valencia, replacing Verdasco, who played very well at times in London; but Verdasco can always be swapped in against Berdych, whom he has a decent record against, on Sunday.

Lopez and Verdasco should have no problem putting away the doubles rubber if it’s played by Dlouhy and Hajek, but I’m personally hoping that we end up with Lopez-Verdasco vs. Berdych-Stepanek – two brilliant Davis Cup doubles teams against each other in what may turn out to be the decisive rubber. I could go for some of that.

This has the potential to be a really interesting final. Team BirdWorm have had a magnificent run to get here, Berdych is untouchable on his day, and Stepanek certainly will relish the opportunity to make his presence felt on the Armada’s home ground; but do they have enough left in reserve at the end of a long season with their entire nation resting solely on their shoulders (no offence, Dlouhy and Hajek) after rising to the occasion so many times before? As for the Armada, there’s enough questions surrounding the fitness of their top players to make an upset seem possible; but I think their greater resources, and the fact that the entire team have proven records of lifting their game for Davis Cup and seem to relish playing for their country, will still be more than enough to retain the cup.

I reckon 4-1 to Spain. What do you guys think?

Play starts 16.00 local (15.00 GMT).

D Cup Final: Teams Nominated

Posted by gauloises1 on November 17, 2009

Just in case anyone’s forgotten about the forthcoming Davis Cup final, to be held in Barcelona starting December 4th; the probable team lineups have been leaked, if not officially confirmed.

According to the Davis Cup official website, the Czech Republic team captain Jaroslav Navratil will be sticking with the same lineup that got him this far; Tomas Berdych, Radek Stepanek, Jan Hajek and Lukas Dlouhy. Not that he particularly had much choice, you’d think.

Choice is not particularly a problem for Albert Costa, Spain’s Davis Cup captain. According to marca.com, Costa is going with Nadal, Verdasco, Lopez and Ferrer (with the option of swapping in Robredo if the hamstring injury Ferru sustained recently in Valencia proves lingering).

Sad that Boss isn’t included, but it’s not surprising.
