Venus Wins Shiny Thing, Much Cash

Posted by gauloises1 on March 2, 2010

So that made-up exo thingy I was talking about was last night – sorry, the BNP Paribas Showdown of Champions in Madison Square Garden for the Billie Jean King Cup – and Venus won it. Well done. She beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 64 before facing Kim Clijsters, who defeated Ana Ivanovic 76(2), and beating her 64 36 75.

Venus just wears winning so well. What a great month for her. Of course, she couldn’t have done it without the help of her supporting cast who each reportedly showcased their special talents.

Sveta emoted.

And Ana … well, you know.

And a good time was had by all. Or possibly not. I hear that the event was fairly sparsely attended but that the tennis was good. Linz, are you out there? What did you think?

AO Day Five: The Belgians

Posted by gauloises1 on January 22, 2010

Well, two out of three isn’t bad.

The shock of the day came courtesy of Nadia Petrova, who bundled Kim Clijsters unceremoniously out of the tournament, 60 61. Yes. Kim got one game.

What a bizarre, listless, error-strewn performance from Clijsters. Even she didn’t know how to explain it. Hats off to Nadia, though. I have never seen her play so aggressively and so cleanly. Kim may have been off her game, but Nadia didn’t give her even half a chance to get into it.

All is not lost, though, as Justine Henin scraped through in three sets over Alisa Kleybanova, and Yanina Wickmayer did the same against Sara Errani – despite being troubled with a back injury.

Uh-oh.

Justine and Wicky will face off in the next round. Now that could be fun. Both have a lot to prove and have been looking pretty determined so far in 2010. Expect fireworks.

Hit For Haiti: The Photographic Evidence

Posted by gauloises1 on January 17, 2010

I was going to be really good and only post a few, but there are too many I like too much. So I’ve put them under a cut.

Hit For Haiti: the Video Evidence

Posted by gauloises1 on January 17, 2010

All I can say is that this was so worth staying up until 4.30 a.m. for. I laughed until I cried and had several moments of rampant sentimentality. At the risk of sounding like someone who collects kitten plates, it made me so proud to be a tennis fan. They did a good thing here.

In case you missed it:

Pictures to come …

Australian Open: You Can’t Stop It

Posted by gauloises1 on January 14, 2010

Is anybody else having a slightly difficult time getting their heads around the fact that the Australian Open is, like, next week? No? Just me, then.

Anyway, it is, and the players have been out on the practice courts in Melbourne to prove it.

Mr. Incredible.

Venus just showed up to be serene at you.

Justine … didn’t.

Andy Roddick sweats a lot.

Andy Murray mucks about a lot.

Kim wears a lot.

And Masha proves again that she’s ten times prettier just practicing …

… than she is selling earrings or whatever the hell is going on here.

Kolya, meanwhile, continues with the grand plan.

They’ll never see him coming.

Lethal Brissle. Belgian Style.

Posted by gauloises1 on January 10, 2010

So the ‘dream final’ in Brisbane between Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin … happened. And wasn’t all that much of a dream, actually. Except in the sense that it was long and confusing and sweaty and full of inexplicable reversals and ended with a sense of disappointment rather than resolution. So a lot like most of my dreams.

Kim Clijsters d. Justine Henin, 63 46 76(6)

If she was wearing five layers and desperately trying not to drop a cigarette, this would be an accurate impression of me trying to walk down the street this week.

Another great week for Kim, although her tennis at times was less than convincing, but she got the trophy. As for Justine and the Henback / Comebackhandening, after such a long lay-off I thought she looked in pretty good shape, despite having lost the final.

I don’t think she agrees.

Sisters, sisters …

We get it. They’re cute.

Seriously though, they’re cute.

Starting off the year in style.

Brisbane: Molik, Clijsters Set to Meet

Posted by gauloises1 on January 3, 2010

Little to report on the men’s side from Brisbane as heavy rain postponed the scheduled main draw matches. James Blake and Andy Roddick did manage to make it through in the doubles, though.

On the women’s side, Andrea Petkovic put out eighth seed and all-round unreliable Iveta Benesova, but the biggest news was wildcard Alicia Molik, making her return to the tour, who defeated Ekaterina Makarova 64 16 64.

I watched Alicia playing not long ago on livestream and was struck by just how much I love her game. It’s great to see her back on the tour and winning matches – albeit probably not for long this week, as she faces Kim Clijsters next who disposed of Tathiana Garbin 62 61. Clijsters and Molik are long-standing contemporaries and friends, as their post-match pressers demonstrate (Kim’s is here, Alicia’s here). I’m excited.

Bring it on.

Diamond Games Are a Girl’s Best Friend

Posted by gauloises1 on December 10, 2009

Kim Clijsters beat Venus Williams 61 75 at the Diamond Games exhibition in Antwerp today.

But, you know, in a fun way.

Make For the Village of Bree …

Posted by gauloises1 on September 20, 2009

So Kim Clijsters was honoured for her US Open feats at a big party in her hometown of Bree yesterday, where presumably the celebrations went on late into the night at the Prancing Pony, before some Nazgul broke in and murdered everybody.

Kim Shaves Wim

Posted by gauloises1 on September 17, 2009

So the Mumback fallout continues. I don’t know if you guys have already seen this, but I thought it was so cute I wanted to post it. Kim Clijsters shaves her coach Wim Fissette’s head as the result of a bet over whether she could win the US Open …

Kim is handy with a pair of scissors. Also: did we know Wim was so hot?
