Linz (Not That One) Brings the LOLs

Posted by gauloises1 on October 14, 2009

Bless Austria. This is probably the best set of player party photos I’ve seen all year.

I love her. Did she lose yet?

How Flavia makes this get-up drip sex is a mystery.

anna-lena groenefeld

I think I saw this in Eurovision this year.

ioana raluca olaru

Ioana and Ouanna should totally get together. Then they’d really wanna.

timea bacsinszky

Even in this innocent outfit, Bacsinszky still looks fresh from the crack den.

I want to fix the neckline of her dress so badly it’s killing me.

sorana cirstea linzsorana cirstea

The always-adorable Sorana Cirstea.

Probably the most normal thing Rezai has ever worn.

Think there’s any chance Lucie knows what that brown substance is?

daniel koellerer anna hammel

Crazy Dani Koellerer with Miss Austria 2009. Of course.

strange dancing hobbit

A dancing hobbit, for some reason.

alize cornet

hobbit and sorana

i have no idea who this is but its a brilliant face

And a good time was had by all.

Sunday Titlists: Guangzhou, Quebec

Posted by gauloises1 on September 21, 2009

So I have massively shortchanged the two WTA International-level tournaments going on this week, mainly by not mentioning them at all. But they happened!

shahar trophy guangzhou

Shahar Peer picked up her first title since Istanbul 2006, defeating first-time finalist Alberta Brianti 63 62 for her fourth singles title.

brianti guangzhou dejected

Well done to both girls. And that’s all I have to say about that.

czink trophy quebec

A maiden singles title for Melinda Czink, who took out Aleksandra Wozniak in the semi-finals and benefited from the defending champion Nadia Petrova’s retirement in the quarters due to viral illness.

nads quebec retirement

Czink did really well though, beating Lucie Safarova 46 63 75 in an all-lefty final.

safs czink trophies quebec

And I’m out of things to say about this. Oh – wait – those trophies look seriously crappy. OK, now I’m out.

Toronto: Quarter-finals Set

Posted by gauloises1 on August 21, 2009

Well, the second, fourth, fifth and fourteenth seeds will feature in the Toronto quarter-finals, but that’s it. Second seed Serena Williams will take on qualifier Lucie Safarova after they both scored straight sets wins over Alona Bondarenko and Zheng Jie respectively.

Elena Dementieva was taken to three sets by Shahar Peer but survived. She’ll play Samantha Stosur, who rolled over Virginie Razzano 63 61. If both play well, this match could be amazing.

Jelena Jankovic put an end to Kim Clijsters’ run (YES!), coming back from the loss of the first set to win in three. She’ll play Alisa Kleybanova, who defeated Aravane Rezai. I hope JJ doesn’t get hit off the court.

And the final quarter-final will feature Agnieszka Radwanska,  who defeated qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko in straight sets, against Maria Sharapova who won the clash of the back-from-injury decisively over Vera Zvonareva. It was Agnieszka if memory serves who knocked Maria out of the US Open back in 2007. I wonder if she can do it again? The Raddest ‘Wanska hasn’t been beyond the quarterfinals stage of a tournament all year. This could be her moment.

Cincinnati: Safina, Svetlana Scrape Through

Posted by gauloises1 on August 12, 2009

Less than convincing stuff from the top Russians last night. Dinara Safina only got past Roberta Vinci 64 in the third, while Svetlana Kuznetsova needed a third-set tiebreak to determine perpetually-in-need-of-a-sandwich Lucie Safarova.

Venus Williams was in much more intimidating form, rolling over Olga Govortsova 62 62, and fifteenth seed Dominika Cibulkova fell to Peng Shuai Shuai Peng, 62 61. Has Domi had a good result since Roland Garros? Maybe she played too much tennis in the first half of the year.

Or maybe she’s just Domi, I don’t know. Sorana beat Meghan Shaughnessy 75 75 (isn’t she old?) and Yanina Wickmayer had a really solid win over Francesca Schiavone. The other upset come courtesy of steady but unspectacular Alona Bondarenko, who knocked out tenth seed Nadia Petrova 62 63.

A Bad Day to Be KK. Or CSN. Or British.

Posted by gauloises1 on July 20, 2009

Actually, that could be pretty much any day, couldn’t it?

Anyway, remember Kaia Kanepi? Remember when she went quite deep in Dubai and was quite good? No, me neither. She fell to Olga Govortsova 61 62, and Lucie Safarova accounted for token Tim Katie O’Brien. Still needs a sandwich though.

olga govortsova

Tatjana Malek accounted for Carla Suarez Navarro, the fifth seed in Bad Gastein. And it was a good day for the Germans in Hamburg, with no less than four making it through to the second round (the sole objection being Bjorn Phau). Wildcards Daniel Brands and Simon Greul had a particularly good day, accounting for Victor Crivoi and Janko Tipsarevic respectively. Auf gehts and all that.

This might be Brands. I’m honestly not sure.

RG Day Four: Who's in Jail Tonight?

Posted by gauloises1 on May 27, 2009

You know, it really sucks to have all these unfinished matches. I tend to agree with Mats on Game, Set & Mats (still funny); why send players out to play for an hour? Is that really fair? You start on a Sunday for god’s sake. What’s the hurry?

Anyway, much like fellow same-initialled Frenchie Alize Cornet, Arnaud Clement came back out today and won his match, hence keeping me in the suicide pool. Which is reason enough to give you a photo of him:

So much more attractive in his civvies, although without sunglasses his eyes always remind me of that thing Marilyn Monroe has in Some Like It Hot about men who wear glasses and how much more vulnerable and soft-looking they are.

Anyway, tonight it’s the turn of Nikolay Davydenko, whose match against Argentine Diego Junqueira was called off at 2-2 in the fourth set (Kolya having dropped the first 4-6).

Look at this picture, and tell me you don’t believe Kolya has scary hypnotic powers.

Junq in the Trunq.

Also in jail for the night, although maybe in her case it’s more like a stay of execution; Venus Williams, who dropped the first set to Lucie Safarova 7-6. I only saw the tiebreak, but it looked like Safarova was hitting some exceptional winners. That forehand is just impossible to read.

She was also fired up like nobody’s business. So maybe the fading light was a relief for Venus. We’ll see if Safarova can maintain her form tomorrow.

More hot Fed Cup action.
