Umagstaad: Double the Brazilian, Double the Fun

Posted by gauloises1 on August 1, 2009

So we have not one but two Brazilians in the semi-finals of Gstaad. That’s how I like my slightly pointless tournaments served. The first came courtesy as a stroke of somewhat-luck, as the aforementioned nose-jobbed Bellucci progressed courtesy of Nicholas Kiefer’s retirement when the German was 63 01 up. Then Marcos Daniel beat Florent Serra to make the semis that much more tasty.

nose job kieferdaniel

They’ll be joined by Andi Beck and Igor Andreev, who beat Jeremy Chardy in straight sets. Boo.

chardy

Jezza shows us his “woe” face.

And in Umag, Kolya and Boss will be representing in the semis. Unfortunately against each other.

ATP Tuesday Results: Bastad, Stuttgart

Posted by gauloises1 on July 14, 2009

Mixed fortunes for the Davis Cup survivors today, as Jose Acasuso and Andreas Beck (who both lost rubbers over the weekend) were dumped out of Stuttgart by Jeremy Chardy and Simon Greul respectively, and Tomas Berdych – who has a right to be exhausted if anyone does – lost in straight sets to Nicholas Kiefer, 63 63.

kiefer

On the other hand, Pico came back strongly in Bastad, beating eighth-seeded compatriot Maximo Gonzalez in three sets. Guillermo Canas took out Grigor “still learning” Dmitrov, qualifier Potito “serious business” Starace beat Julien Benneteau, and adorable Bjorn Phau beat the Roland Garros junior champion, Daniel Berta.

Tennis, Swedish Open

We’ll be keeping an eye on this one. Unfortunate tongue placement aside.

D Cup QFs: Just Get a Room. And Stay In It, Please.

Spain 2 Germany 1

kiefer zverev2

Yep. Kiefer and Zverev were no match for the giggle twins. Verdasco and Lopez took the rubber 63 76(1) 67(6) 63. Which at least produced some mildly amusing photos, although with a distinct deja vu feeling about them.

If Argentina lose tomorrow (which they will) and this lot win (which they will), I am going to be pissed off. Which I will.

RG Day Four: ATP Round-Up

Posted by gauloises1 on May 28, 2009

I am now getting actually rogered by time. In the Federer 2004-7 sense. So have a barely quarter-assed round-up of penile action on the clay today.

Perhaps the best news (apart from Murray getting through) was that Gilles Simon actually had a smooth win over Robert Kendrick, beating the American 75 60 61.

gilles

Apocalypse to follow.

Prince Knees just had to go and put out another one of my favourites (and I only mean that about 90% ironically), Teimuraz Gabashvili.

basher

Shown celebrating the only point he won.

In other Spaniard news, Nico Almagro put out Ernests Gulbis in four, as Ernests displayed his ongoing speciality, beautiful losses in the second round. No more Ernie tongue for us.

ernie tongue

Fellow young gun Marin Cilic, however, progressed smoothly into the third round, losing just four games to Dudi Sela.

marin

For the love of god, someone feed that boy.

Increasingly woof-worthy David Ferrer beat Nicholas Kiefer, so he’ s on course for a Rafa-ing:

ferru kiefer

rusty

… as is Lleyton Hewitt, who beat Golubev to progress to the third round.

And, well, that’s about it …

Except oh yeah, Wawrinka beat Massu.

massu

Has anyone seen his tambourine?

Friday Results: Finalists Finalised

Posted by gauloises1 on May 23, 2009

Dusseldorf

I’ve given up trying to understand what’s happening here. All I know is that it involves a lot of happy Teutonic hugging.

kiefer mischa

And that it’s Germany vs. Serbia in the final tomorrow. Who needs Nole, eh?

Admittedly tangential, but why do all Serbs seem to have such soft, shiny hair?

Singles Round Robin Matches
P Kohlschreiber (GER) d A Vinciguerra (SWE) 61 62
J Tipsarevic (SRB) d F Piccari (ITA) 62 63
*M Gonzalez (ARG) d E Korolev (RUS) 63 36 63

*M Gonzalez (ARG) replaced J Monaco (ARG) (left wrist)

Doubles Round Robin Matches
N Kiefer (GER) / M Zverev (GER) d R Lindstedt (SWE) / R Soderling (SWE) 76(4) 46 13-11 – Saved 1 M.P.

N Zimonjic (SRB) / V Troicki (SRB) d F Piccari (ITA) / A Seppi (ITA) 60 76(5)

Kitzbuhel

Little-known Armada tugboat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez upset Mikhail Youzhny to book a place in the final, where he’ll face the Queen of Spain (go with it) Julien Benneteau in a clash that tournament organisers are already billing as “… who?”

ggl

Singles – Semi-finals
G Garcia-Lopez (ESP) d [7] M Youzhny (RUS) 63 16 76(5)
[LL] J Benneteau (FRA) d O Hernandez (ESP) 63 64

– Saved 2 M.P.

Warsaw

Let’s hear it for plucky Romanian qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru! Her name might abbreviate to “dul”, but her game certainly isn’t. Apparently, as she upset sixth seed and perpetual disappointment Daniela Hantuchova for a place in the final. She’ll face Alona Bondarenko, a finalist back in 2007, who knocked out Britland fave and all-round Tim Anne Keothavong in straight sets – on the same day that Keo drew Safina as a first round opponent at Roland Garros. Double trouble.

WARSAW OPEN 2009dulgheru

Singles – Semifinals

(8) Alona Bondarenko (UKR) d. Anne Keothavong (GBR) 62 75

Strasbourg

Not a single seed remains in this tournament. “Strasbourg” is German for “clusterfuck”, you know. So it’s a Rezai-Hradecka final! Go girls.

Singles – Semifinals
Aravane Rezai (FRA) d. (Q) Viktoriya Kutuzova (UKR) 64 62
Lucie Hradecka (CZE) d. Ayumi Morita (JPN) 60 10 ret. (left thigh strain)

Doubles – Semifinals
(2) Dechy/Santangelo (FRA/ITA) d. Beygelzimer/Sun (UKR/CHN) 63 76(2)

Kitzbuhel, Dusseldorf Results: Stuff Happens

Posted by gauloises1 on May 18, 2009

Dusseldorf

team germany

Team Germany, the heroes of the day.

Local heroes Germany took a 2-1 lead over the U.S., last year’s champions Sweden are up 2-1 over France, Italy are 2-1 up over Russia … for god’s sake, can’t someone have a different score? Why are you people such sheep?

maximo g

Oh, and Argentina are 1-2 down (see what I did there? I gave it a different twist), because Maximo Gonzalez lost to Victor Troicki, and then Elf and Pico got beaten by Errol Flynn and some dude with tattoos. Which does not compute. How could such a hot team fail?!
