Monsoon Wedding

Posted by gauloises1 on April 13, 2010

Sania Mirza and whirlwind fiance Shoaib Malik tied the knot in Hyderabad after the legal problems surrounding the engagement were concluded when Malik divorced Ayesha Siddique, his apparently former wife, last week.

Happy ever after? Best of luck …

Bigamy, Bigamy, They’ve All Got It In For Me

Posted by gauloises1 on April 6, 2010

Sania Mirza and her fiancee Shoaib Malik are wading ever deeper into controversy as their planned April 15th wedding draws closer. In the latest twist, Malik is being questioned by Indian police and has had his passport taken away, effectively marooning him in Mirza’s home city of Hyderabad.

The police are investigating claims made by a woman named Ayesha Siddique, who insists that Malik married her in June 2002. Malik admits marrying Siddique over the phone and signing a marriage certificate, but claims that the marriage is invalid because Siddique turned out not to be the woman he’d seen in photographs and, when he visited her family in Hyderabad, was introduced to him as an elder cousin while the family told him Ayesha was away on business. A relative of the Siddique family claims however that Malik got Ayesha pregnant (she suffered a miscarriage), while Ayesha has told police that Malik offered her money to keep quiet and threatened to kill her if she went public. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Malik was below India’s age of consent (20) at the time of the phone ceremony, but above the age of consent in Pakistan (18).

And that’s without the protests from nationalist and religious groups on both sides.

Best of luck, Sania.

Mirza Engaged to Shoaib Malik

Posted by gauloises1 on March 30, 2010

So, remember when Sania Mirza was engaged and then she wasn’t? (I may not have blogged about the second part.) Well, she’s engaged again … this time to former Pakistani cricket captain Shoaib Malik.
*jaws drop*
Apparently, Malik (who was banned for, er, reasons after Pakistan’s performance against Australia earlier this year) and Mirza met at Hobart in January, when Mirza was photographed with some Australian cricketers if you recall, after which Mirza kicked her former fiance Mirza to the curb. And now they are engaged. A former Pakistani cricket captain and one of India’s most famous female athletes.
She really doesn’t do things by half, does she?

The Jokes Write Themselves, Really

Posted by gauloises1 on January 13, 2010

Australian cricketers Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson popped up in Hobart to play some doubles with Alicia Molik and Sania Mirza. And presumably recruit them for the national side.

I’m not saying anything.

USO Day One: Serious Business

Posted by gauloises1 on September 1, 2009

The top laydeez opened their accounts in New York today in fairly crushing style. First up, Kim Clijsters destroyed Viktoriya Kutuzova 61 61, while Victoria Azarenka did the same thing to Warsaw champion Alexandra Dulgheru and Agnieszka Radwanska only allowed Patricia Mayr one more game. You’d think they were racing to be the first to knock someone out of the tournament, had not Anastasia Yakimova stolen the show by retiring after just three games, sending Vania King through to the second round.

Also in the mood for baked products? Marion Bartoli, singlehandedly ending Paraguay’s interest in the ladies’ singles by defeating Rosana de los Rios 61 60. Vera Zvonareva and Flavia Pennetta continued the identical scorelines trend of the day, beating Nuria Llagostera Vives and Edina Gallovits respectively 60 64.

Can’t decide whether I love or hate Vera’s outfit. The colours are a tad ‘shades of diarrhoea’ for my liking, perhaps. Anyhow, Momo (unsurprisingly) made almost the heaviest weather of the top ladies, giving away a whole seven games to Tatjana Malek.

That honour in the end must go to Samantha Stosur, who squeaked by wily veteran Ai Sugiyama 64 46 64. And looked good in her outfit, if not tennistically speaking.

All in all only one women’s seed fell today, that being Kaia ‘how am I still seeded’ Kanepi, who was knocked out by Taipei’s Kai-Chen Chang in three sets. Maria Kirilenko, Aleksandra Wozniack and Anna Chakvetadze both progressed, albeit with a slight hiccup in Chakvetadze’s case (dropping a set to Yurika Sema). And how about Sania Mirza, beating Olga Govortsova 62 36 63?

I live for the day when she and Querrey set up a tennis academy and the tour is populated by their freaky off-hand offspring.

Birmingham Results: Shazza, Mirza Out

Posted by gauloises1 on June 13, 2009

It’ll be Li Na Na Li vs. Magdalena Rybarikova in the finals at Edgbaston Priory as the great runs of Sharapova and Mirza came to an end today.

Bye girls. It was fun while it lasted.

Sania started off well, taking the first set 63, but it all went horribly wrong after that, and tough grass-court prospect Rybarikova bagelled her in the second and snatched a tight third 63. I think this might be Rybarikova’s second final of the year after Pattaya City, but I’m too lazy to check.

Things were much more straightforward for Li Na Na Li, who took out Shazza in straights, 64 64. This was still a great result for Sharapova, and look at how much it meant to LNNL.

li na2li na3

For reals, it’s great to see LNNL healthy and playing well. So much talent.

Mirza to Tie the Knot?

Posted by gauloises1 on May 29, 2009

Hot on the heels of the Wozniacki engagement flap, the Hindustan Times is reporting that Sania Mirza is engaged.

Not to worry, however; apparently she’ll stay a Mirza – the groom-to-be is Sohrab Mirza (no relation).

A family source told HT on Thursday that Sania is set to get engaged to long-time friend Sohrab Mirza on July 10 in her hometown, Hyderabad. It is learnt that invitations have already been sent out.

“The boy is not related to them,” the source said after being asked about the common surname. “She knows him from her school days.” The groom-to-be is a businessman from Hyderabad.

Interesting to see whether this turns out to be true.
