ATP/WTA Week Ahead: Miami

Posted by gauloises1 on March 22, 2010

So the draw for the Sony Ericsson Open came out today, ably assisted by the always-adorable if more-than-occasionally agonising Marin Cilic …

He drew himself in Fed’s quarter. Idiot.

… and the always delightful Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Yep, you’re the top seed again.

Draw here.

Quarters: Federer-Cilic, Murray-Soderling, Nadal-Tsonga, Djokovic-Roddick

Draw here.

Quarters: Kuznetsova-Li, Venus-Radwanska, Azarenka-Jankovic, Wozniacki-Dementieva

Main draw play starts Wedmesday 24th March.

Bad Pusher and Brainless Ball-Basher: the Adventure Continues

Posted by gauloises1 on February 25, 2010

Sweet article (and accompanying video) on Wozniacki and Azarenka doing kind of a cheesy photoshoot in Dubai …

Asked by an increasingly exasperated photographer and shoot director to act angry, fierce and pull at each other’s jewellery as if they were fighting in front of an audience of surprised duty-free shoppers the two friends collapse into giggles every time they caught sight of the other’s quiff.

“It’s too funny,” Azarenka says as she tries to catch her breath. “It’s hard to act angry off the court. Can we do something like we like each other? At the end?”

It’s fascinating to see the friendships that exist on the ten-month tour. While an outsider might think it’s a lonely, competitive existence where you have more rivals than mates, Wozniacki and Azarenka are quick to dispel that myth.

“It’s a great life we have,” says Danish star Wozniacki. “We play tennis and that’s what I love to do and to be able to live from your hobby is just great.

“I have a lot of friends on the tour, Victoria is one of my best friends. It’s nice to have some good friendships on the tour.”

Azarenka, sitting nearby having her hair styled, shoots back a retort. “We’re friends?” Wozniacki pauses for a moment. “So you’re not one of my good friends?”

“Well, I’m one of yours. But I don’t know if you’re one of mine,” deadpans Azarenka, before they both start to laugh.

Love them together. Read the whole thing.

Dubai: Venus Victorious

Posted by gauloises1 on February 21, 2010

Blooming in the desert once again, Venus Williams defeated Victoria Azarenka 63 75 to take the Dubai title for the second year in a row.

I have to say that was one impressive performance from Venus. It’s been almost a year since her last title (Acapulco) and that’s almost as long as it’s been since I’ve seen her play that well. She was sharp, focussed, serving great, and her concentration didn’t lapse. She’s nearly 30 and she’s still showing up and winning big titles when she wants to. I call that impressive.

That said … poor Vika. She clearly really wanted this title and played, I thought, really well. Venus was just too good. It’s dispiriting in the extreme, but on the plus side, does provide some classic Azarenka reaction shots:

Not funny.

There better have been a group hug on Twitter.

Congratulations, Venus.

Your Tennis News Round-Up: Who’s In …

Posted by gauloises1 on February 19, 2010

Shahar Peer, mainly.

She’s now beaten Yanina Wickmayer, top seed Caroline Wozniacki, and now Li Na after the latter was forced to retire with a back injury trailing 75 30. She may be surrounded by a small fleet of bodyguards and yet to play on the main court, there may be bizarre Twitter assassination nonsense going on, but Shahar is doing her job and doing it incredibly well under difficult circumstances. Good girl.

Victoria Azarenka had an impressive 61 63 over Vera Zvonareva, a titlist last week in Pattaya City and the conqueror of Jelena Jankovic one round earlier. Before today, Azarenka was 1 for 4 against Zvonareva. Nice to see her making inroads in the head-to-head.

Agnieszka Radwanska is also having a quietly impressive tournament, bagelling Flavia Pennetta and then earning a three-set win over Regina Kulikova, who took out Svetlana Kuznetsova. And props to Venus Williams for overcoming temporary nemesis Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to progress to the semi-finals.

In Memphis, Maria Sharapova is into the quarterfinals, which means she’s won her first matches of 2010. She’ll be hoping to join Anne Keothavong, playing her first proper tournament since her extended lay-off with that knee injury, who beat Karolina Sprem in straights to progress to the semifinals. But another Brit, Elena Baltacha, stands in her way …

On the men’s side, Andy Roddick is the only top seed left after he defeated James Blake. He’ll be facing Lu later for a place in the semifinals.

Jo and Gael will be facing off in Marseilles after they both had tough wins today over Ouanna and Seppi respectively.

And I have no idea what’s going on in Bogota or Buenos Aires. But the latter seems to have involved wins for Boss and Ferru, so I’m in favour, in general.

Dubai: Off-Court

Posted by gauloises1 on February 15, 2010

Have a few photos of the ladies doing media things in Dubai, because I think they all look very pretty and I like to recognise this fact.

Your top seed, ladies and gentlemen.

Hoping to spoil the party.

Talk to the hand.

Love Venus in enigmatic media mode.

Such a badass.

Valentine’s Day snuggles.

In conclusion: Victoria Azarenka really impressed me in toughing out a three-set win (including a bagel) over Vera Zvonareva; Jo lost his five-set virginity and didn’t seem to mind too much; Serena was on terrifying form; and Kolya goes into his showdown with Federer with his aura of invincibility more than a little battered.

AO Day Six: Smooth Sailing

Posted by gauloises1 on January 23, 2010

Vera Zvonareva and Victoria Azarenka will meet in the fourth round after both cruised through their third round matches in straight sets. Yes, unbelievably, both Vera and Vika had matches without drama.

Well, there was a little drama with rain showers forcing the Hisense roof to be eventually closed. But then it was all plain sailing, as Azarenka destroyed Tathiana Garbin 60 62 with the Italian putting up only token resistance.

And she did it all dressed like an ’80s pencil sharpener. Sadly things will get tougher, as she’s due to meet Vera Zvonareva in the next round. Not only did Zvonareva batter Dulko 61 75, but she’s played Azarenka four times and won in straight sets every time. Ouch.

Sam Stosur also came through, scoring a solid 64 61 victory over Alberta Brianti, and will meet the winner of Serena Williams and Carla Suarez Navarro. Which will be Serena.

Move, Bitch, Get Out of the Way

Posted by gauloises1 on January 22, 2010

Victoria Azarenka demolished Stefanie Voegele 64 60 in a match where probably the most interesting thing was her running straight into a linesperson and knocking her over …

… and then apologising frantically.

Endless fun.
